description: Build with Cohere's enterprise AI — Command models, Embed embeddings, and Rerank for retrieval pipelines.

## Overview
Cohere is an enterprise-focused AI lab whose platform centers on three pillars:
Command models (chat/generation, strong on RAG-grounded enterprise use),
Embed (multilingual embedding models — among the best for search), and Rerank
(cross-encoder reranking that dramatically improves retrieval quality). The
distinctive strength is the retrieval stack: Embed + Rerank is arguably the
best managed retrieval-quality combination available, and Cohere's models are
tuned for grounded, citation-friendly enterprise generation.
For builders, Cohere often enters through retrieval: even teams using other
providers' LLMs use Cohere Embed and Rerank for the search layer. The Command
models then become natural for the generation layer in RAG systems, with
features like citation support designed for grounded answers.
The mental model: Cohere is the enterprise RAG company that also makes LLMs.
Evaluate the retrieval components independently — they're frequently best in
class even when the LLM choice goes elsewhere.
## When to use
- Enterprise RAG: grounded generation with citations over company data.
- Retrieval quality as the bottleneck — Embed + Rerank upgrades.
- Multilingual search and generation (Cohere's language coverage is broad).
- Any stack needing best-in-class reranking regardless of LLM provider.
- Enterprise deployments needing data-governance-friendly AI (private
deployments available).
- Grounded chat where answers must cite sources.
## Core concepts
- **Command models**: chat/generation models tuned for enterprise RAG —
grounded responses, citation support, tool use. Evaluate on your grounded
tasks, not generic chat benchmarks.
- **Embed**: embedding models with strong multilingual and domain performance.
The foundation of your retrieval quality — benchmark against alternatives on
your corpus.
- **Rerank**: cross-encoder reranking over candidate passages. The standard
second-stage retrieval upgrade — often the single biggest retrieval quality
win available.
- **Grounded generation**: Command's training emphasizes answers grounded in
provided documents with citations. For RAG products, this reduces the
"fluent but unsupported" failure mode.
- **Multilingual**: Embed and Command cover 100+ languages. For multilingual
retrieval, this is a genuine differentiator — test on your languages.
- **Private deployments**: dedicated/private deployment options for data
governance. Relevant for regulated enterprise use.
- **Connectors**: managed data connectors for RAG (enterprise search
integrations). Useful when your corpus lives in enterprise systems.
- **API simplicity**: clean, focused APIs per capability. Integrate Embed and
Rerank independently of Command — they're separable by design.
## Practical workflow
1. **Start with retrieval.** Even before choosing an LLM: index your corpus,
test Cohere Embed for retrieval quality, add Rerank on top. Measure the
quality delta — this is often the highest-ROI step in any RAG project.
2. **Benchmark embeddings on your corpus.** Your documents, your queries,
your relevance judgments. Generic embedding benchmarks don't predict your
corpus.
3. **Tune the rerank stage.** Rerank depth (top-k from retrieval → rerank top-n)
trades latency for quality. Find your knee point empirically.
4. **Evaluate Command for generation.** With retrieval fixed, test Command on
grounded generation: faithfulness to retrieved docs, citation accuracy,
and task quality.
5. **Test multilingual paths.** If applicable: embed, rerank, and generate in
each target language. Cross-lingual retrieval (query in one language, docs
in another) is a specific strength to verify.
6. **Consider private deployment.** For regulated data: evaluate private
deployment options against your governance requirements.
7. **Monitor retrieval and generation separately.** Retrieval metrics (recall,
rerank precision) and generation metrics (faithfulness, task success) —
when answers degrade, you need to know which layer broke.
Checklist for Cohere in production:
- Embed benchmarked on your corpus; Rerank depth tuned.
- Command evaluated on grounded generation with citations.
- Multilingual paths tested per target language.
- Retrieval and generation metrics monitored separately.
- Private deployment evaluated if governance requires.
## Common pitfalls
- **Rerank skipped.** Using Embed without Rerank and leaving retrieval quality
on the table. Rerank is the cheapest big win in the stack.
- **Generic embedding benchmarks.** Choosing embeddings on public leaderboards
instead of your corpus. Your documents are the benchmark that matters.
- **Rerank depth unexamined.** Default top-k values without tuning the
latency/quality tradeoff for your corpus.
- **Generation evaluated without retrieval fixed.** Testing Command on a broken
retrieval pipeline and blaming the model. Fix retrieval first.
- **Citation assumptions.** Assuming grounded generation is automatically
faithful. Evaluate citation accuracy — models still misattribute.
- **Monolingual testing for multilingual products.** Each language needs its
own evaluation; quality varies.
- **Ignoring the separable stack.** Treating Cohere as all-or-nothing. Use
Embed+Rerank with any LLM — the retrieval stack stands alone.
- **No layer-separated monitoring.** When RAG answers degrade, not knowing
whether retrieval or generation regressed. Monitor both.
