# Universal Correlation Detector
## Overview
Methodology from arXiv:2609.29954 (Watanabe, Matsuura, Takagi — U. Tokyo / RIKEN RQC, 24 Sep 2026). A single building block — **universal correlation detection** — state-agnostic binary tests that distinguish a bipartite state ρ_AB from the product of its marginals ρ_A ⊗ ρ_B while matching the *known-state* optimal first-order exponent — plus two standard coding tools (position-based decoding, convex splitting) yields **universal (channel-agnostic) capacity-achieving codes for 6 communication tasks**, two of which were previously open:
1. cq channel coding w/ unknown shared-randomness distribution
2. cq wiretap coding w/ unknown shared-randomness distribution
3. One-way secret-key distillation from cqq states
4. Entanglement-assisted classical communication (recovers compound-channel results [67,68] with a simpler proof)
5. **Entanglement-assisted quantum Gel'fand–Pinsker coding** (new)
6. **Entanglement-assisted Marton's inner bound for L≥2-receiver quantum broadcast channels** (new)
## Core Recipe (the transferable pattern)
### Step 1 — Reduce the task to binary discrimination
The task (decoding, secrecy, key distillation) is reduced to distinguishing correlated state ρ_XB from its uncorrelated counterpart ρ_X ⊗ ρ_B. The first-order optimal exponent is the mutual information I(X:B)_ρ (quantum Stein's lemma).
### Step 2 — Replace the state-dependent test with a permutation-invariant one
Two levels of knowledge, two constructions:
**Fully universal (cq states, NO state knowledge):** POVM element
P^(n)(a) := Σ_{x^n} |x^n⟩⟨x^n| ⊗ { ρ_{B x^n} ≥ 2^{na} · σ^{U,n}_B }
where σ^{U,n}_B is the **universal symmetric state**: with H^{⊗m} = ⊕_λ W_λ ⊗ U_λ (Schur-Weyl, Young diagrams λ ∈ Y^d_m),
σ_λ := Π_λ / dim(W_λ ⊗ U_λ), σ^{U,m} := (1/|Y^d_m|) Σ_λ σ_λ.
**Semi-universal (general ρ_AB, ONLY marginal ρ_B known):** projector
P^n(a, ρ_B) := { σ^{U,n}_{A B^n} ≥ 2^{na} · σ^{U,n}_{A} ⊗ ρ_B^{⊗n} }
### Step 3 — Invoke the poly(n) domination lemma
Key bound (the engine of universality): any permutation-invariant state is dominated by the universal symmetric state up to polynomial factors:
ρ^{⊗n} ≤ poly(n) · σ^{U,n}, poly(n) = (n+1)^{|X|(d+2)(d−1)/2} [dim W_λ ≤ (m+1)^{d(d−1)/2} (Weyl), |Y^d_m| ≤ (m+1)^{d−1} (type counting)]
Poly factors vanish in the first-order exponent: type-I error ≤ poly(n)·2^{−nt(a − I_{1−t}^↓(X:B)_ρ)}, type-II error ≤ poly(n)·2^{−na}. Optimizing t→1 recovers the Stein exponent for EVERY compatible state simultaneously.
### Step 4 — Plug into the coding theorem template
Position-based decoding (message index m lives in the classical register; decoder runs the correlation test per position) + convex splitting (for secrecy/Eve) → channel-independent code. Achievable-rate conditions keep the SAME form as the known-channel case; only the "need to know" list shrinks.
## Achievability Theorem Template (reusable)
> There exists a code depending only on ⟨what side info remains⟩ achieving rate R for ANY channel/state satisfying R < I(·:·)_ρ, while sender/receiver need NOT know: the channel description, the input distribution, or the exact capacity value.
Instantiations:
- **Thm 10 (cq coding):** rate R < I(X:B)_ρ, only rate-target + shared-randomness structure known
- **Thm 12 (wiretap):** secrecy rate R1−R2 with R1 < I(X:B)_ρ, R2 > I(X:E)_ρ
- **Thm 14 (SK distillation):** key rate R1−R2 with R1 < I(U:B|E')_ρ′, R2 > I(U:E|E')_ρ′ via Markov chain X→U→T
- **Thm 16 (EA classical):** rate R < I(B:C)_{N(θ)} with only the shared entangled state θ_EC known — channel N fully unknown (recovers C_EA compound results)
- **Thm 20 (EA Gelfand–Pinsker):** R1−R2 with R1 < I(B:C)_{N_{AS→B}⊗id_C(θ_ASC)}, R2 > I(S:C)_θ
- **Thm 22 (EA Marton, L receivers):** 0 < R_l < I(B_l:C_l)_{N(θ)}, Σ_{l∈S} R_l < Σ_{l∈S} I(B_l:C_l) − I[S]_θ (total correlation) — first universal Marton bound
## When to Use / Extend
- **Universal/compound/arbitrarily-varying channel settings** — replace state-conditioned decoders with the detector; poly(n) factors are free
- **Unknown-noise robustness arguments** — any proof whose error exponent survives poly(n) prefactors transfers verbatim
- **Quantum resource theories & learning theory** — authors flag correlation-detection tests as building blocks for state-agnostic resource detection / learning correlations
- **Any bipartite "is this correlated?" test with partial marginal knowledge** — cq: zero knowledge needed; general: one marginal suffices
## Pitfalls
- **Only first-order optimality is claimed.** Second-order refinements of known-state Stein exponents do NOT automatically universalize — the poly(n) slack absorbs O(log n) terms.
- **Universal symmetric state domination is dimension-dependent:** poly(n) = (n+1)^{|X|(d+2)(d−1)/2} — for cq states factor is per-type; strings of the same type P share σ_{U,m_x}^{⊗} factors (type-counting is what keeps the exponent |X|-free)
- **Ref. [11] subtlety:** the test identity P^(n)(a) = σ^{U,n}_{X B^n} ≥ 2^{na} σ^{U,n}_{X} ⊗ σ^{U,n}_B holds only when p(x) > 0 ∀x; the paper's construction avoids full-support assumptions
- **Thm 22 (Marton) needs mutual-information / total-correlation VALUES informed to the parties** — the code is universal in the channel but not in the rate region
- **Commutativity is load-bearing:** [σ_{B x^n}, σ^{U,n}_{B}] = 0 and [σ^{U,n}_A ⊗ ρ_B^{⊗n}, σ^{U,n}_{AB^n}] = 0 are what let Nussbaum–Szkołka / multivariate Araki–Lieb–Thirring-type bounds apply; check before porting
## Key Lemmas Inventory
- Schur–Weyl decomposition H^{⊗m} = ⊕_λ W_λ ⊗ U_λ; permutation-invariant ρ^m = Σ_λ ρ_λ ⊗ (I/dim U_λ)
- Domination: ρ^m ≤ max_λ(dim W_λ)·Σ_λ σ_λ ≤ (m+1)^{(d+2)(d−1)/2} σ^{U,m}
- Petz Rényi mutual info I_α^↓(X:B)_ρ via Sibson identity: = (α/(α−1)) log Tr[ (Σ_x p(x) ρ_{Bx}^α)^{1/α} ]
- Convex splitting (unipartite Anshu–Jain–Warsi / multipartite): mixes states to decouple — supplies the security half of wiretap/key-distillation proofs
- Position-based decoding: correlation test applied per message position → union bound over messages
## Relation to Prior Work
- Universal symmetric states: Hayashi (original universal decoder for cq channels), Nussbaum–Szkoła domination bounds
- The cq universal test appeared in Dasgupta–Warsi–Hayashi (IEEE TIT 71, 3719, 2025) for arbitrarily-varying multiple-access; here repurposed for correlation detection
- Compound-channel EA capacity: [67,68] — this paper recovers it with a strictly shorter proof
